The Dr. Ben Saltzman Story
Presented by
Rotarians Larry & Brenda Nelson
of Mountain Home, Arkansas
Dr. Ben Saltzman, a member of the Mountain Home, Arkansas Rotary Club played a pivotal role in the effort to eradicate polio from the face of the earth. As a Rotary International Director, Dr. Ben, as he was called, suggested that with polio vaccine being available, Rotary might consider tackling polio. A program was implemented in the Philippines in 1979. The success of this program was the impetus for the Rotary "Polio Plus" program that began in 1 985. This program has resulted in polio being actively present in only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
